2006 12 08 SCRIBE!

Hello everyone! I am the scribe for December 08 2006
I will review every bit of assignments we did in class.

First of all this was our homework from the day before this class.
Find 30% of 85 in 3 different ways.

1) Convert to DECIMAL
85
----- = 85/100= .85 x 30 = 25.5
100

2) Equivalent FRACTION
30%.... 25.5
------ = -------
100 ...... 85

3) PICTURE

Now let's go back to December 8th's math class
First I will give you a brief review. We looked at Finding how to get a percent of a certain number.

for example: What is 10 percent of 79
get the fraction of the number out of 100

NUMBER(79)
------------------- = numerator(79) /denominator (100) x percent
100

79
----- = 79/100= .79 x 10 = 7.9
100

Here are some questions that Mr. Harbeck gave us.

- If a grid represented 500 people what would 10 squares represent?
So there are 500 people but you just have to represent the 10 squares in the 100 square grid.

There are different ways to show the equation. Here are some of it.
500 ÷ 10 = 50
100 ÷ 10 x 5= 50
The 10 squares in the 100 square grid represents as 50 squares if the a grid represented 500 people
10 squares in 100 square grid = 50 squares in 500 people

-What part of the unit square would represent 250 people
Pretend you are cutting off 500 into 2 parts which represents 50% of it.
500 ÷ 2= 250

- What part of the square equals 125 people
Now pretend tou are cutting of the 250 parts you cut off from 500 or you can divide 500 into 4 parts.
500 ÷ 2= 250
250 ÷ 2= 125
or
500 ÷ 4= 125

REVIEW TIME!
100% is everything
- it can be written as 100
..............................------ or 1 (whole out of whole or ONE WHOLE!)
...............................100

50% is half of everything
- it can be written as 50......1
............................------ or --- (half out of whole or 1 part out of 2)
............................100.......2
To find 50% you can divide by 2 (÷2)
In decimal it is written as 0.5
example: 50% of 80 is 40, how?
divide 80 by 2 and you get 40

25% is a quarter of everything
- It can be written as 25.......................................1
.............................----- <--can beSIMPLIFIED to ----
.............................100.......................................4
To find 25% you can divide by 4 (÷4)
In decimal it is written as .25
example: 25% of 80 is 20,
80
÷4= 20

10% is ten parts of everything.
- it can be written as...10.......1
...............................------ or ----
...............................100......10
To find 10% you can divide by 10 (÷10)
In decimal it is written as 0.1
example: 10% of 80 is 10
80÷10= 8

1% is one part of everything
- It can be written as...1
..............................------
..............................100
this can be simplified to. . .? nopE! you canNOT! simplify it to any way you want because 1 part of any number will be always 1!
To find 1% find the decimal of the number out of 100 then multiply it by 1
I
n decimal it is written as 0.01

example: 1% of 400
400
------ = 400 ÷ 100 = 4 x 1= 4
10

EXAMPLES OF
EQUIVALENT
FRACTION :

100.....500
------ = ------
100.....100

50......250
----- = ------
100....500

25......125
----- = ------
100....500

10........50
----- = ------
100....500

1...........5
---- =.. -----
100.....500

OKIE. .so that's all!
