Growi
ng Post #1
Percent

Question 1
What is a good definition of percent? You should use
words symbols, pictures and numerical examples in your definition. (suggestion gliffy is an excellent tool for adding detail to your definition.)

Question 2
How are three fifths (3/5), 3:2, 60% and 0.
6 all the same? Use pictures and words to show your answer.

Question 3
Show 3 different ways to find 35% of 80. (bubbleshare is an excellent tool to animate the many different ways of finding these answer).

Question 4
Find a link to blogs that deal with percentages. Leave a comment behind and add the link with a review (What the post was talking about....yes you have to read the post and why others should read the post) Hint In the side bar there are links to other schools. Three of them have done work on percentages!
8Z Math Linden

This post talked about how to find a percent out of a number. It also showed how to convert a number into another. They also talked about how to find 1% and mulitplying it to 100 which is used for the 100 grid squares. I noticed that instead of using the 100 grid they used 100 marbles to show their answer.

Question 5
The principal announced that 50% of the children in Ms. Stanzi's class met their reading goal for the month and that 55% of the children in Ms Lowrey's class met their reading goal for the month. Ms Stanzi said that a greater number of her students met their reading goal. Could Ms Stanzi be correct? Why or Why not.

1st:
Ms. Stanzi can be correct
if for example she has 40 students in her class. 50% of her class met their reading goal for the month. So 20 students in her class met their reading.
If 55% Ms. Lowrey's class met their reading if for example she has 30 students in her class. 55% of it is 16 who met their reading goal for the month.

THIS MEANS MS. STANZI'S CLASS HAD THE GREATER NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO MET THEIR READING GOAL.

2nd:
If Ms. Stanzi is wrong this means if for example. She has 26 students and 50% met their reading goal ehich is 13 kids.

If Ms. Lowrey's class have more students. for example she has 39 students. 55% of them met their reading goal. So 21 students did. This means if Ms Stanzi had 13 students who met their reading goal. Ms. Lowrey had 21 kids who met it. MS. LOWREY had a greater number of students who met their goal.
Question 6
Use a hundred grid (unit square) to illustrate the following questions. Once you have explained and illustrated what the question means solve it.

a) 16 is 40% of what number?
40% / 40 = 1
16/40= 0.4
0.4 x 100= 40
40/100 = 16/40
-40 is out of 100 you have to find one percent of it.
-40/40= 1% 16/40= 0.4
-You then multiply 0.4 by 100 to find how many 0.4 are in 100 sqaures.
-So 0.4 x 100= 40%
the equivalent fractions are: 40 out of 100 or 40/100 and16 out of 40 or 16/40

b) What is 120% of 30?
30/100
30/100= 0.3
0.3 x 120= 36
-You are trying to find 120% of 30.
-REMEMBER PERCENT (%) IS ALWAYS OUT OF 100.
Obviously, 120 is more than 100%.
-You can also see that I used two grids to show this because 120% will not fit in one grid.

The grid is out of 100 so you will divide 30 by 100 (why?) because to find 1% of
something is by diving it by 100.
30 divide by 100 is equals to 0.___?
-
(SHORT CUT*) pretend that there is a decimal after 30, it looks like this>> 30.
-You then move the decimal 2 places to the right and why 2 to the right? because there 2 ZEROS in 100.
30 /100= 0.3 Now multiply 0.3 to ___?
-You will n eed to multiply 0.3 by the percent which is 120%
So 0.3 x 120%= 36
-What is 36?
36 is the number you are looking for. It is the 120% of 30!

Comments:You labeled and titled your post correctly.

Question 1
10/10
Comments:You answered the question correctly by using numerical examples, symbols and pictures which you made on gliffy. I like your pictures, they are very descriptive and colourful.

Question 2
10/10
Comments:You showed how all the values are all equivalent using images. I thought you explained your answers very well.

Question 3
10/10
Comments:You showed 3 ways to find the answer using words and pictures.

Question 4
4/5
Comments:You left a comment behind on a students post from another school and you pasted the link and made a review on it, on your post. One thing you can do, is maybe tell the person how they can improve their post.

Question 5
10/10
Comments:You answered the question correctly and you explained why or why can't the statement the teacher made can or can't be true by using pictures and words.

Question 6
13/15
Comments:You answered both questions correctly and you used pictures to explain your answer. You should explain why your answer is right (ex. by dividing the fractions into decimals to see if they are equal)

Overall Mark

Overall Comment for the Growing Post: You did an Awesome Job on your post, you obviously put alot of effort into your post because of your pictures and descriptions. If anyone needs help in math, I think you would be another one i would recommend because you have clear detailed explanations and you look like you know what you are doing. Awesome Job !!
